Firm-wide
leverage of institutional knowledge and expertise
Background:
McCarthy Tétrault is one of Canada's most prestigious
law firms, with offices throughout Canada, along with
an international presence in New York and London.
The Challenge:
To improve the leverage of the firm’s expertise
and knowledge across both geographic and practice related
boundaries. McCarthy Tétrault had also embarked
upon a major organizational change initiative aimed
at establishing a true corporate structure and realigning
its practice groups along subject matter expertise rather
than geographical boundaries. The firm’s knowledge
management strategy would need to support the achievement
of these important organizational goals.
The Solution:
The deployment of AdvanceKnowledge Central, ii3’s
legal industry specific solution for knowledge management,
across the firm’s multiple practice groups and
geographic locations. AdvanceKnowledge provides McCarthy
Tétrault with the ability to capture, describe,
find, and re-use the firm’s institutional knowledge.
Lawyers are able to quickly search for relevant knowledge
and expertise that can be immediately applied to a client
matter.
AdvanceKnowledge Client Edition was also deployed.
This tool is an addition to the main KM solution that
allows McCarthy Tétrault to dynamically and selectively
share knowledge with their client base. This allows
lawyers to focus on value added tasks, and it allows
clients to immediately and intuitively access and navigate
the firm’s extensive legal resources.
The Results:
• Recognized as Best in Class 2003 at the
Canadian e-Content Awards.
• Firm wide adoption across all national
practice groups with extremely high contribution
and usage levels. AdvanceKnowledge has delivered
results that exceed the firm’s stated goals
for the initiative.
• Knowledge management has become a fully
integrated component of McCarthy Tétrault
workflow and processes, providing them with an important
competitive advantage.
