Solution Planning
Planning lays the groundwork for every ii3 solution. It is in this phase that vision, scope and high level requirements are confirmed and a project plan is developed. During this phase the following questions need to be asked and answered:
- What is the business purpose of this solution?
- Who are the stakeholders? Business? Technical? Users?
- What are the needs of the target users?
- What are the solution parameters?
- Budget?
- Timelines?
- Resources?
- Regulatory?
- What are the solution priorities?
- What resources will be required to be in place to support and maintain the solution?
- What is the communications plan? Internal? External?
- How will we measure success for the solution?
Solution Requirements Development and Analysis
Defining detailed business and user requirements provides the framework for solution design. Most often this phase results in a series of use cases to be provided to the design and development teams for analysis and consideration in solution determination. Activities in this phase typically include:
- Review and analysis of existing relevant materials
- Stakeholder interviews
- Development of a requirements list or matrix
- Development of usage scenarios
- Inventory of infrastructure impacts and restrictions
- Proof of concept evaluations
During this phase, some projects may also include a "buy vs. build" analysis and product evaluation.
Solution Design
The design phase involves a series of consulting
and Joint Application Design (JAD) sessions where business
analysts and technical resources will work with business stakeholders
and subject matter experts to develop:
- Product selection and validation
- Functional specifications (a mix of user interaction and
system functions)
- Technical specifications
- User interface design
- Workflow & business process engineering
Each of the above are established to be in accordance with the scope vision and high level requirements outlined in the previous phase.
Solution Implementation
This phase involves the implementation of the solution. For projects where an existing product has been purchased, this phase may take form of customization development or application configuration. This phase may include any combination of the following activities:
- Third-party/existing software configuration and customization
- Software development
- Software integration
- Interface development
- Quality Assurance
- Solution reviews and signoff
Solution Deployment
Deployment represents a range of activities from installation through to application usage in day-to-day work processes. Activities may include:
- Installation and deployment assistance
- Content migration, population and preparation
- User acceptance testing
- Solution documentation
- A communications plan to set expectations and drive adoption
- End user and support staff training
- Application support
In this phase the goal is to:
- Ensure that the proper user and administration training for the solution is in place.
- Ensure proper user, administration, and technical support for the solution is in place.
- Ensure that the solution is properly rolled out to the user base.
- Ensure that solution deployment is inspected and measured.
